It is with a lot of pleasure that I inform you regarding the exhibition « Haïti, un peuple d’artistes » (Haiti, artists people) that will happen this summer at the cutural Center of Lavandou.

"Painters people are leaving in Haïtiwas writen André Malraux during a visit in this country in 1975, noting that on this island everything is a subject to pictural transcription : market, wedding, fishing, religious syncretism, etc. Twenty five years after the ans surrealist André Breton, the writer and minister was noticing the extraordinary wealth of haitian’s artistic creation, in spite of this first black republic’s tormented history of modern word, sovereign state since 1804. A country, one of the poorest in the word, stricken again by misfortune during a terrible earth-quake in 2010.
After having beeing inspire by the french model excluding their own popular cultural values, than influenced by the american’s occupation or attracted by the european taste, the haitian’s culture was build during XXth century with the expression forces of resistance mixing poetry, magic, religion and political commitment, thru artistic’s propositions very diverse.
The exhibition proposed in Lavandou this summer 2016 is presenting around 80 works, coming from our collection, of many artists of differents generations.
Among them, we can name Prospère PIERRE-LOUIS (creator Saint-Soleil’s movement, first artistic rural community in Haïti), Jacques Enguerrand GOURGUE, Préfète DUFFAUT, Frantz ZEPHYRIN, Serge JOLIMEAU, Lionel SAINT-ELOI, etc. Paintings, sculpturespiecenfe of Bòsmetal (artists that work with dwoums, petrol drums), flags sewed with pearls, etc., telling the wealth of their creativity.
Raphaël Dupouy, cultural attaché of Lavandou is curator of the exhibition.
Besides, a conference “understand Haïti today” by Jacques Léon-Émile, President of “Haïti Memories and Culture” will happen on friday 29th of july at 6 p.m.
